What does Learner Generated Contexts mean to you?

We would like to generate a 500 word piece which outlines LGC - it would help if we could all share some ideas about what it means to us. Some ideas I came up with to think on:

  1. Definitions - what LGC is.
  2. Practical - how LGCs might work in practice
  3. Projects - what LGC projects are currently ongoing and how they are viewed as being LGCs
  4. Why LGC matters - what difference does it make, and to whom
  5. As an extra - ideas for a bulleted list of key points

Things that, so far, have struck me as interesting...

Projects:

Notions around collaboration, community, co-construction of learning, participatory learning

Using technologies as a means of social inclusion - thinking on these projects

The idea of moving from something small to something greater - expanding local contexts to wider ones

Elasticising the contexts of the everyday through reflective practice, e.g. through projects like StreetSafe and activities like the Bebo Race

Audience and Purpose:

Thinking about LGCs helps us to look at learners (and learning) from multiple perspectives and makes us question our traditional understanding of these things

Who cares about these things? All kinds of people: educators, policymakers, charities, young people, schools, their parents

Contexts - Why LGC matters and to whom:

  • gives learners a voice
  • values learning in informal contexts
  • provides young people with an 'open context' for learning
  • faciliates, listens, guides
  • meets learners where they're at and takes them where they would like to go
  • learning as a journey rather than a destination
  • encourages flexibility, trust, reflection, growth
  • values choice
  • starts with the person, learner first, learning second
