Magister Ludi or The Glass Bead Game by Herman Hesse (Submitted by Fred Garnett)

Magister Ludi, great idea, past civilisations are resources that we play with and re-arrange to gain new insights (and we do it as a game), bad idea that there is a "gold medallist" Magister, but it was 1948 and it was probably Hesse's view of alt.olympics.

(Wilma replies:) Actually Fred, the book was written in 1943 and was mentioned in his 1946 Nobel Prize winning ceremony. Magister Ludi - The Glass Bead Game - what a fascinating sounding book (which I haven't read, but very much want to now)... amazing how a quick surf of the web can whet your appetite. Love this quote from the book...

"No two games are ever the same. They will present an entirely different appearance and run an entirely different course,

depending on the qualities of mind, character, mood, and virtuosity of the players."

Whee... imagine a game like that. Hmm, no on second thoughts, if I had a game like that - I'd never get anything done! *chuckle* Actually, it does remind me of a beans game I used to play that was based on patterns. An interesting site: http://home.earthlink.net/~hipbone/ to distract you, now you've distracted me... *chuckle*
